<p>Please join the Friends of the Institute on January 14 as they bring you Katherine Luber and “Beyond Dürer: Becoming a Museum Director.”</p>
<p>Dr. Katherine (Katie) Luber became the new director of Mia just one year ago. Katie will share her professional journey to becoming a museum director. It began at Bryn Mawr with her PhD dissertation on Albrecht Dürer’s paintings, with many experiences along the way before becoming the director of the San Antonio Museum in Texas and now here at Mia. Her first year has been a baptism by fire with the pandemic and all the urban unrest in the community. Please join us as we kick off the new year.</p>
<p>Tickets are available for Friends members on December 15 and the general public on December 17.</p>

Curators of “<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/art-artists/explore/khatt-islami">Khatt Islāmi: Sacred Scripts from Islamic Africa</a>”—Amallina Mohamed, of the Somali Museum of Minnesota, and Mia’s Jan-Lodewijk Grootaers—will explore the context of Arabic calligraphy and its connection to healing, education, music, and faith. They are joined in conversation with Dr. Fatima Tanni Lawson, and calligraphy artist Ayan Ahmed, who will demonstrate a range of calligraphic techniques and artistry.</p>
<p>“<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/art-artists/explore/khatt-islami">Khatt Islāmi</a>” is on view through August 1, 2021.</p>

Wikipedia edit-a-thons are held around the world to improve content on this free online encyclopedia, highlighting visual artists who are often excluded from art history. The <a href="https://blacklunchtable.com/">Black Lunch Table (BLT)</a> is an oral-history archiving project and Wikipedia initiative, which was founded by New York-based artist Heather Hart and Chicago-based artist Jina Valentine. Their roundtable sessions provide space for interdisciplinary and intergenerational discussions, bringing together a diversity of community members and fostering candid conversations. Their Wikipedia edit-a-thons mobilize a collective authoring of articles pertaining to the lives and works of Black artists.</p>
<p>No experience is necessary; all you need is computer access. The talk will be followed by a training session for newcomers. Suggested entries will be shared with participants in advance. Registration will open on December 21.

<p>The Souls Grown Deep Foundation promotes the work of African American artists from the American South, and supports their communities by fostering economic empowerment, racial and social justice, and educational advancement. Join us in conversation with the foundation curator, Raina Lampkins-Fielder, and three emerging curator interns—Starasea Nidiala Camara (Mia), Ja’Hari Ortega (Museum of Fine Arts, Boston), and Stella Hendricks (Baltimore Museum of Art)—as they talk about their experiences in curation, event planning, and exhibition development at their respective museums.<br />
Held in conjunction with the special exhibition <a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/in-the-presence-of-our-ancestors-southern-perspectives-in-african-american-art/">“In the Presence of Our Ancestors: Southern Perspectives in African American Art”</a>, on view through April 11.</p>
