Vitality Arts: Sketching Fashion

Explore some of the great (potentially lesser-known) female art icons from Mia&#8217;s collection. Each week, we&#8217;ll learn about a different legendary artist such as Yayoi Kusama, Elizabeth Catlett, Dorothea Lange, and Helen Frankenthaler. Additionally, we&#8217;ll investigate a wide range of media, including graphite, watercolor, and printmaking, as we discover what inspired these famous artworks.

Join us for a conversation with artist María Berrío in conjunction with her exhibition &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/maria-berrio-songlines">María Berrío: Songlines</a>,&#8221; on view at Mia from September 12, 2026, to January 10, 2027. Berrío&#8217;s work brings us into worlds of flags fluttering in the air, humans enmeshed with the natural world, and birds flying into the unknown.
In discussion with Leslie Ureña, associate curator of Global Contemporary Art at Mia, and co-curator of the exhibition, Berrío will share more about the evolution of her practice and how she builds stories out of layers of paper, traces of graphite, swaths of watercolor paint, memory, and myths, as well as personal and global histories.

Art museums are increasingly being called upon to demonstrate not only cultural value but also social impact. Growing empirical evidence from psychology and public health suggests that the arts and cultural engagement can contribute meaningfully to human flourishing—the capacity for individuals and communities to live meaningful, connected, and fulfilling lives.
This lecture examines what research tells us about the relationship between art museums and flourishing, and explores the unique role art museums play as civic institutions. Drawing on empirical research and examples from local museums, Katherine Cotter, the director of research for the Humanities and Human Flourishing Project at the University of Pennsylvania, considers how museums support several dimensions of flourishing, such as social functioning, emotional well-being, and mental health. She&#8217;ll also address emerging opportunities for museums to articulate and assess their impact in ways that resonate with contemporary social and civic priorities.

Katherine N. Cotter, PhD, is a psychologist whose research examines how engagement with cultural institutions contributes to human flourishing. Her work integrates insights from psychology, cognitive science, empirical aesthetics, and museum studies to better understand the mechanisms through which cultural experiences help people thrive. Through her research and public engagement, she works with cultural organizations to translate flourishing research into practical strategies to strengthen visitor experiences and community impact. She currently serves as the director of research for the Humanities and Human Flourishing Project at the University of Pennsylvania.

Explore Mia&#8217;s &#8220;<a href="https://new.artsmia.org/exhibition/paris-couture">Paris Couture</a>&#8221; exhibition and sketch costumed figures using low-pressure exercises and a variety of materials. This course is suited for all experience levels, including beginners. Each week, teaching artist Stephanie Watson guides you through the galleries, stopping at a few pieces to study shape, color, and line. Back in the studio, you’ll sketch clothed mannequins and live models using different techniques and mediums, including pencil, watercolor, oil pastel, and collage.
Prompts meet you where you are, whether you’re just getting started or have plenty of experience. This course is all about learning to look longer and deeper, loosening perfectionism, getting playful on paper, and having fun with the other artists in the room.

Together, you&#8217;ll experience a vibrant testament to the people, cultures, and creative forces that continue to shape New Mexico.

<h2>About the Speaker</h2>
Jana Gottshalk is the E. Boyd Curator and Museum Director at Nuevo Mexicano Heritage Arts Museum, where she brings more than two decades of experience in Spanish Colonial and Nuevomexicano arts to the preservation and interpretation of New Mexico&#8217;s rich cultural heritage. She&#8217;s previously worked at El Rancho de las Golondrinas, the Denver Art Museum, and the New Mexico Museum of Art, and her graduate research explored the New Deal era in New Mexico with a particular focus on New Mexican furniture. Through exhibitions that thoughtfully pair historic and contemporary works, and working closely with living artists, Gottshalk reveals the enduring traditions, evolving creativity, and distinctive artistic legacy of New Mexico.
