Arts & Flowers Design Studio
Museum Location: Lobby
Floral Designer: Steven Ward
From the Designer: Our piece is inspired by the natural beauty and bounty of the floral harvest depicted in this representation of indigenous floral sellers by Alfredo Ramos Martinez. Using the rich, but somewhat subdued neutral color palette, including pinks, peaches, taupes, and creams, and turning it up a notch, we are experimenting with gradations of color to represent the movement inherent in the painting. In the juxtaposition of the linear stands, the curvature of the baskets, and the naturally occurring textural variations in the flowers and plants we have chosen, we are echoing the geometry one is immediately struck with in viewing Martinez’s work. In creating the “fantasy” flowers and incorporating succulents and a selection of plants and flowers more native to southern environments, we are playing with scale and dimension, emphasizing and honoring the fruits of these women’s labors.
Arts & Flowers is a full-service flower design studio conveniently located at 6011 Excelsior Boulevard in St. Louis Park. Our long-lasting “instantly recognizable” arrangements feature the freshest quality flowers from all over the world as well as locally grown products. Festivities & Rich Field Flowers
Museum Location: Breezeway at Third Avenue Entrance (indoors)
Floral Designer: Greg Njoes
From the Designer: This year’s art piece features a series of repetitive vertical and horizontal design elements. I chose vertical framing and repetitive containers with flowers in more natural colors and textures. The fresh tropical side arrangements repeat similar depictions in the painting. The floral offerings are inspired by a tailored “we’re ready for the market” type of style as if they would be offered for sale next to other vendors selling produce and crafts. No high style design, but more of a fresh and full “take me home” design.

Girl in My Garden and Watershed Design Group
Museum Location: Agra Café Counter
Floral Designers: Linda Wandt (Girl in My Garden) and Karen Thullner (Watershed Design Group)
From the Designers: Ramos Martinez explored and depicted the people and culture of his homeland, Mexico, through his art. His work highlights indigenous crafts and traditions, such as flower vendors. The simplicity of the people contrasts with the intricate beauty of flowers in this piece. The use of cardboard as a canvas shows the resourcefulness of the people depicted and the artist himself. Reimagining flower vendors offers an enjoyable juxtaposition for this occasion. The flowers capture the essence of simplistic beauty of the time.

Institute of Floristry
Museum Location: Third Avenue Entrance (outdoors)
Floral Designers: Students of the Institute of Floristry and the Design Group
From the Designers: The beauty and structure of Las Vendadoras de Flores inspired our interpretation of the piece. We were excited to see the piece’s solid use of core floral design concepts that are taught at the Institute—texture, proportion, rhythm, and balance. We used these concepts to honor the lush beauty and vibrancy of the vendadoras. We added boldly colored flowers as a nod to winter’s end in Minnesota and the transition from monochromatic hues to the vibrancy of spring and summer. We hope you enjoy our interpretation!

Len Busch Roses
Museum Location: Gallery 300
Floral Designer: Sandy Schroeck, AIFD
From the Designer: Inspired by Alfredo Ramos Martínez’s Las Vendedoras de Flores, this floral interpretation brings the painting to life through structure and blooms. Four columns symbolize the elegant figures of the flower vendors, each crowned with baskets overflowing with subtle florals, mirroring the women carrying blossoms atop their heads and in their hands. Soft peach, cream, sage and brown tones evoke the serene beauty of Martínez’s work, transporting viewers to the lush flower fields of Mexico.
Brought to you by Len Busch Roses, Plymouth, this display celebrates both artistic and botanical expression, uniting tradition and nature in a breathtaking floral tribute.

From the Designer: I most often approach Art in Bloom interpretations in form, line, color, and feel rather than, say, research, story, and literalism. (Though the discovery of all of that behind the scenes is also part of the fun!) Sometimes, in studying the art piece, I simplify it through squinted eyes and blurry sight to see the main elements, what speaks the loudest: creamy white, well-placed coral, blue, resolute linear strokes, rhythm. An ease, an assurance.
When I look at this scene, there is so much to enjoy for me in the way it’s painted:
– The figures seem to float themselves, light and completely unburdened, along their path, their movement an effortless flow. It seems they know this day, a day like any other, somewhat mundane, yet they enjoy their work. What they peddle is a form of abundance and water.
– A striking sky blue that completely uplifts the energy of the scene (imagine the painting without it), made all the more striking by its delivery: a stark, straight line cutting through at the shoulders; only their heads and their abundant baskets of delicately sparkling petals float in the sea of blue.
– Strong vertical lines, softened just a bit with the slightest of curve, spaced in a steady rhythm across the canvas, balanced, unboring in its odd-numbered and layered figures. Bursts of round shapes breaking up and framing the strokes, which creates a tidy, finished composition.
– Those gentle colors. The description of this piece on artsmia.org uses the term “high-key” to describe the palette: made up of light tones. The mood this creates for me is richly grounded in earth: I can almost feel the dust, the terra cotta clay, the woven fibers, and the earthenware. It feels cool alongside what I picture as an early, quiet morning in a warm place, the calm before the bustle, when the baskets are still full, the petals pristine, with anticipation, hope and potential in what the day could reveal.
My challenge as a designer this year required acceptance in the space between what I could dream of for this installation and what I had, now, to work with. (Isn’t this every creator’s woe?)
As I chose to interpret this piece, I’m keeping in mind the peaceful harmony of the warm, earthy tones, celebrating the whites, the linear and the rounds, and the idea of how generous and soaring is the feeling of petals overflowing. The location of my display also spoke loudly to me—the walls, the floor, the air beyond the railing and, of course, the large apricot-toned painting, “False Start,” beyond on its left—so that my placement could nestle in and complement its neighboring elements, creating an energetically larger presentation and adding a flow of discovery as you move through today’s joy-filled experience.
Dear reader, this installation is for you (alone). Enjoy your flowers.

From the Designer: What an honor to interpret Alfredo Ramos Martínez’s beautiful artwork “Las Vendedoras de Flores,” which translates to “the flower vendor.” I share his Mexican background as my mother is Mexican American. I’ve spent many years traveling to Mexico and being immersed in the culture.
I love the simplicity of this piece, focusing on the women carrying flowers in various ways, surrounded by large leaves and the beautiful blue sky. Their baskets are filled with delicate angel’s trumpet flowers. While this piece is mostly subdued in color, I decided to bring in bold and bright colors as depicted in some of his other paintings. My intent is to interpret his beautiful painting through foliage, colorful flowers, and pieces that are from Mexico.

Selbu Star Design
Museum Location: Gallery 200
Floral Designer: Julie Harstad
From the Designer: Inspired by Alfredo Ramos Martinez’s painting “Las Vendedoras de Flores,” this floral arrangement blends tradition with modern design. The tall, sleek columns represent the market stalls, providing a contemporary framework for the flowers.
Floral Selection: The arrangement features a range of cream and taupe blooms that reflect the painting’s analogous colors. Recently introduced floral varieties mix with familiar blooms, creating a harmonious blend of old and new.
Composition: The columns representing the flower sellers capture the sedate movement of the flower sellers. Varying floral heights and layers add depth and invite exploration from different angles.
Modern Interpretation: By integrating modern elements like sleek columns and minimalist design, this arrangement honors Martinez’s work while offering a fresh perspective. It celebrates both tradition and innovation, paying tribute to the timeless beauty of flowers and the stories they tell.
